Jewish author, Bernard Lazare stated in L'Antsemitisme son histoire et ses causes in 1894
If this hostility, even aversion, had only been shown towards the Jews at one period and in one country, it would be easy to unravel the limited causes of this anger, but this race has been on the contrary an object of hatred to all the peoples among whom it has established itself. It must be therefore, since the enemies of the Jews belonged to the most diverse races, since they lived in countries very distant from each other, since they were ruled by very different laws, governed by opposite principles, since they had neither the same morals, nor the same customs, since they were animated by unlike dispositions which did not permit them to judge of anything in the same way, it must be therefore that the3 general cause of anti-Semitism has always resided in Israel itself and not in those who have fought against Israel.
Bernard Lazare also wrote in L'Antisemitisme, 1894:
An energetic, lively and extremely haughty people, considering itself superior to all other nations, the Jewish race wished to be a Power. It had an instinctive taste for domination, since, by its origin, by its religion, by its quality of a chosen people which it had always attributed to itself, it believed itself placed above all others. To exercise this sort of authority the Jews had not a choice of means, gold gave them a power which all political and relgious laws refused them, and it was the only power which they could hope for. By holding this gold they became masters of their masters, they dominated them and this was also the only way of finding an outlet for their energy and activity.
The emancipated Jews entered into the nations as strangers... they entered into modern societies not as guests but as conquorors. They had been like a fenced-in herd. Suddenly the barriers fell and they rushed into the field which was opened to them. But they were not warriors... they made the only conquest for which they were armed, that economic conquest for which they had been preparing themselves for so many years.
The Jew is the living testimony to the disappearance of the state which had as its basis theological principles, a State which anti-semitic Christians dream of reconstructing. The day when a Jew occupied an administrative post the Christian state was in danger. That is true and the anti-semites who say that the Jew has destroyed the idea of the state could more justly say that the entry of Jews into society has symbolized the destruction of the State, that is to say the Christian state.
